Licensing in Utah

Summarized from the state licensing board and state law. Each row links to its source.
License types Utah has no individual HVAC technician license. HVAC is licensed only as the H100 HVAC Contractor classification. The individual-level credentials are DOPL certification as an H100 Qualifier (the person who qualifies an H100 contractor) and, for gas appliance, gas piping and venting work, Certified Natural Gas Technician status.
Journeyman experience Utah has no journeyman HVAC license. For the closest credential, the H100 HVAC Contractor qualifier, Utah requires 4,000 hours within no more than five years as an employee of licensed H100, B100, S350, P200 or P201 contractors, with at least 90% of the work directly related to HVAC. A Utah journeyman, master, residential journeyman or residential master plumber license also meets the requirement.
Journeyman exam There is no journeyman HVAC license exam in Utah. Instead, H100 HVAC Contractor qualifiers must pass the Utah Contractor Business and Law Examination and the Utah HVAC written examination with a score of at least 70%. Both are administered by Prov.
Out-of-state licenses Utah has no contractor reciprocity but allows licensure by endorsement. For HVAC contractors, the H100-specific requirements (H100 trade exam, natural gas technician certification and HVAC experience) cannot be waived when applying by endorsement.
