Do you need a contractor license in Idaho?
Idaho registers, rather than licenses, general construction contractors under the Idaho Contractor Registration Act, through the Idaho Contractors Board at the Idaho Division of Occupational and Professional Licenses (DOPL). Public works contractors and electrical, plumbing and HVAC contractors hold separate DOPL licenses. (source) Idaho requires construction contractors to register unless an exemption applies. Exemptions include people licensed by the state working within their licensed practice, wage employees of a contractor, suppliers who do not install what they furnish, and a single casual or minor project with an aggregate contract price under $2,000 (labor, materials and all other items) that is not part of a larger project. This guide summarizes what Idaho requires to run a contracting business, with a link to the state's own source for every requirement. Licenses for individual electricians, plumbers and HVAC technicians are separate; see the trade guides linked below. Rules change; check the linked source before you apply.
License classes
Idaho's license classes apply only to public works contractors, who need a license separate from contractor registration. Public works licenses come in seven classes: Unlimited, AAA, AA, A, B, CC and C. Each class except Unlimited caps the estimated cost of the public works projects the holder may bid, from not more than $200,000 for Class C to not more than $5,000,000 for Class AAA. (source)
Experience and exams
Idaho's Contractor Registration Act sets no work-experience requirement for contractor registration. The application asks for identity and ownership details, proof of workers' compensation and liability insurance, the type of construction to be undertaken, and any past denial, surrender or revocation of a contractor license or registration. Idaho's Contractor Registration Act does not require an exam for contractor registration. To register, you complete a registration application, provide the requested documentation and pay a fee. (source)
Bond and insurance
Idaho's Contractor Registration Act does not require a bond for contractor registration. (source)
Idaho contractor registration applicants must show general liability insurance, including products and completed operations coverage, of at least $300,000 single limit from an insurer authorized in Idaho. They must also show workers' compensation insurance or explain why coverage is not required. (source)
Fees and renewal
DOPL lists a $120 application/initial fee for Idaho contractor registration, the same for individuals and businesses, effective July 1, 2026. Renewal is $120 for a biennial (two-year) renewal or $60 for an annual renewal, and reinstating a registration costs $40 on top of the renewal fee. The board began transitioning to biennial registration on October 14, 2025. (source)
Idaho Code 54-5211 says a registration is issued for at least 24 months and no more than five years, as the Idaho Contractors Board determines, and the board must notify a registered contractor at least 30 days before the registration expires. (source)
