What license do you need to work as a plumber in Arizona?

Arizona contractor licenses, including for plumbing work, are issued only by the Arizona Registrar of Contractors (ROC). (source) Arizona's contractor law licenses and regulates only contractors (businesses with a qualifying party); it has no individual journeyman or master license. (source)

This guide summarizes what Arizona requires to work as a plumber, with a link to the state's own source for every requirement. Rules change; check the linked source before you apply.

Apprentices

People who complete a U.S. Department of Labor- or Arizona DES-approved construction apprenticeship may file their certificate of completion with the ROC. (source)

Journeyman level: experience and exam

The ROC requires a contractor's qualifying party to have four years of practical or management trade experience, at least two of them within the last ten years. Accredited technical training can count for up to two of the four years, and the registrar may reduce the requirement for a trade where four years is shown to be excessive. (source)

If the ROC requires an exam for the license classification, the qualifying party must pass it no more than two years before applying. (source)

Master level

Arizona's contractor law has no master license; experience requirements apply to the contractor's qualifying party. (source)

Contractor license

Contracting for plumbing work in Arizona requires an ROC contractor's license in good standing; trade work falls under specialty commercial, residential or dual classifications. (source)

Renewal, continuing education and fees

Arizona contractor licenses are renewed biennially (every two years); the registrar may allow annual renewal on a hardship petition. (source)

A.R.S. 32-1126 caps the original biennial application and license fee for specialty residential contracting at $350. (source)

Licensed in another state

Arizona's universal licensing law (A.R.S. 32-4302) grants a same-level license to new Arizona residents licensed in another state for at least one year, if other conditions are met. (source)
