License types
Utah has five plumber license classifications: Apprentice, Journeyman, Master, Residential Journeyman and Residential Master. (source)
Starting out as an apprentice
Apprentices must hold a DOPL Apprentice Plumber license (no exam is required) and must work under the immediate supervision of a licensed master, residential master, journeyman or residential journeyman plumber. (source)
Becoming a journeyman plumber
Journeyman Plumber: at least 576 hours of an approved planned training program plus 8,000 hours of full-time work as a licensed apprentice plumber, or at least 16,000 hours of full-time work as an apprentice plumber. Residential Journeyman Plumber: 432 program hours plus 6,000 hours as a licensed apprentice, or 12,000 hours in a maintenance or repair trade with at least 9,000 hours directly in plumbing. (source)
Journeyman plumber applicants must pass the Utah Journeyman Plumber Written Exam and the Utah Plumber Practical Exam, each with a score of at least 70%. Residential journeyman applicants pass the Utah Residential Journeyman Plumber Written Exam and the Utah Plumber Practical Exam, also at least 70% each. DOPL's exam provider is Prov. (source)
Becoming a master plumber
Master Plumber: at least 4,000 hours of work experience and at least 4,000 hours of supervisory experience as a licensed journeyman plumber; or an associate of applied science or similar degree from a CHEA-recognized institution plus at least 2,000 hours of supervisory experience as a licensed journeyman. Residential Master Plumber: the same hours, earned as a licensed residential journeyman plumber. Master applicants must pass the Utah Plumber Law and Rule Exam with at least 75%. (source)
Running a plumbing contracting business
Plumbing contracting requires a DOPL contractor license in the P200 General Plumbing Contractor or P201 Residential Plumbing Contractor classification. The P200 qualifier must be a licensed master plumber, and the P201 qualifier must be a master or residential master plumber. (source)
Keeping your license current
Plumber licenses renew every two years, due November 30 of even-numbered years. (source)
Licensed plumbers, including apprentices, must complete 12 hours of approved continuing education each two-year licensing cycle. At least 8 hours must be core education, and the other 4 may be core or professional. (source)
DOPL's fee schedule for the current fiscal year lists a $110.00 application fee and a $68.00 renewal fee for all plumber classifications, plus additional fee codes. (source)
Licensed in another state
Utah licenses out-of-state plumbers by endorsement. If DOPL's Endorsement to Utah map shows the applicant's state license as equivalent, the applicant submits a Verification of Licensure from that state. If it shows no equivalent, the applicant must meet Utah's regular requirements. (source)
