What license do you need to work as an electrician in Wyoming?
Electricians are licensed by the Wyoming Department of Fire Prevention and Electrical Safety. Its chief electrical inspector issues the licenses, and the department's Electrical Board sets the licensing rules. (source) Wyoming licenses master electricians, journeyman electricians, low voltage technicians and limited technicians, and registers apprentice electricians and apprentice technicians. (source)
This guide summarizes what Wyoming requires to work as an electrician, with a link to the state's own source for every requirement. Rules change; check the linked source before you apply.
Apprentices
Apprentice electricians must register with the department and renew the registration every year. They must be enrolled in a U.S. Department of Labor-approved apprenticeship program (or an equivalent the department accepts) and be supervised by a licensed journeyman or master electrician. (source)
Journeyman level: experience and exam
4 years (8,000 hours) of electrical work experience under a licensed journeyman or master electrician, plus 576 hours (144 hours per year) of electrically related classroom instruction through an approved electrical apprenticeship training program. No more than 75% of the 8,000 hours may be in any one category (residential, commercial or industrial). Up to 2 years (4,000 hours) of credit may be given for electrically related courses at an accredited school beyond the required 576 hours. (source)
Journeyman applicants must pass Wyoming's journeyman electrician exam, which is based on the current edition of the National Electrical Code. (source)
Master level
8 years (16,000 hours) of electrical work experience, of which 4 years (8,000 hours) must be documented as a licensed journeyman, plus 576 hours of electrically related classroom instruction. An applicant without the 576 classroom hours may instead qualify for the exam with 10 years (20,000 hours) of experience as a licensed journeyman or master electrician, if the Chief Electrical Inspector approves. Contractor license
Electrical contracting requires a Wyoming electrical contractor license, which expires each July 1. The contractor must be, or employ full time, a licensed master electrician of record who is not the master of record for any other contractor. (source)
Renewal, continuing education and fees
Journeyman electrician licenses expire January 1 and master electrician licenses expire July 1, in the third year after the year of issue (a three-year cycle). Renewal costs 50% of the license fee. (source)
Journeyman and master electricians must complete at least 16 hours of approved training before each renewal, and at least 8 of those hours must specifically cover the National Electrical Code. (source)
$100.00 initial journeyman electrician license fee, paid after passing the exam. (source)
Licensed in another state
Wyoming has reciprocal journeyman electrician agreements with Alaska, Arkansas, Colorado, Idaho, Maine, Minnesota, Montana, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Oregon, South Dakota, Texas, Iowa and Utah, and reciprocal master electrician agreements with Idaho, South Dakota and Iowa. Reciprocity waives the exam, not the licensing requirements, and can be used only once. (source)
